Arrive by boat to these barrier islands off Georgia’s coast. Cumberland Island is a pristine wilderness with few people or cars and no stores, golf courses or restaurants; instead, it has primeval forests, sand dunes and wild horses. It is 95% federal park land—thanks to donations by the Carnegie family who first settled there at the turn of the century. John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette were married at Cumberland’s tiny historic African Baptist church.
