Although not the small intimate romantic place we usually recommend, sometime we just can’t resist sneaking in a classic and this is the Great Lakes’ classic resort. Arrive by ferry to this car-free island.
The region between Detroit and Chicago, it includes both Battle Creek and the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. The eastern shore and its lakeside resort villages were popular getaways with Chicagoans at the turn of the century.

Boasting a nicely restored 19th century historic district, Marshall was recently named by the National Trust as one of the “Dozen Distinctive Destinations in America”. According to the Trust president, Marshall is “a unique small town experience rich in historic sites and cultural activities.” Located 3 hours east of Chicago and two hours west of Detroit.

A French Normandy manor house originally built for a wealthy lumbar baron’s son, this Michigan romantic getaway sits in the secluded outskirts of Battle Creek and overlooks pretty St. Mary’s Lake. It has European-style interiors and lovely formal gardens. Located in south-western Michigan, a 2-3 hour drive between both Detroit and Chicago, the manor is 13 miles from Marshall.
